Hurricane outage

22 September 2005 @ lunch time | Comments (20)

Unfortunately, until further notice I’m unable to serve up the Google hurricane maps, due to a large amount of traffic and high server load. I am in a shared hosting environment (_a very good one, at that_), and we all share the responsibility of being considerate to your neighbors. I can’t say I wasn’t warned. (d’oh)

This is a little discouraging, as I was about two days away from re-launching the whole thing using Ajax + MySQL. We’ll see what happens. For now, she’s offline :-(

Update: So Unisys’ servers are being hammered today and that, plus the loads of links (from del.icio.us, digg, Wikipedia, CNN, etc…) began stacking up cgi processes. Basically, I slowed things down a bit for my friends on one.textdrive.com.

I’ve spoken to Nathan Ladd and he’s working on putting this little app under LiteSpeed to accommodate the heavy load.

Stay tuned…

Update: The TextDrive staff have been very accommodating in helping me get this thing off on its own little proxied subdomain. Still working out the kinks.

Update: And we’re back!. Many thanks to Nate and Ryan at TextDrive for getting things served up under LiteSpeed with PHP5. Phew!

September 23, 2005: Moving the entire site over to LiteSpeed. Let’s see how much we can break!

September 23, 2005: All fixed. Thanks Nate!

Hey Andrew, that wasa great hack to the Google maps API thingy. I really helped me decide if I was safe or not during Rita. Unfortunatly it seem Rita’s gonna pull and Allison and stale; which will flood Houston.

well maybe just maybe since CNN thinks what you created was a great tool too, maybe the would be so inclined to help get it back up and running.

yes im whining, i want it back. :((

Yeah, there have been instances of the acceptible linkage policy (which is absolutely ridiculous, btw), but the reality of people’s understanding of how the Internets work doesn’t really make much room for conveniences, such as a “Hey, I’m about to link to you.” Whaddyagonnado?

Host it on filefront you cunt :-P

or try coral:

Hurry :-D, Rita is coming for me! (she is)

Google Maps API keys work on a per-url basis, so Coral is out of the question (also it works on a port that might prevent some firewalled individuals from viewing it, including myself). And Filefront? It’s not a file, it’s an application that requires PHP/JavaScript. Oh, and don’t call me a c—t.

I feel like a dumbass…

I kinda suspected after I posted but oh well :-)

Sorry for your trouble and get it back up!

I caught a glimpse of your Google maps yesterday before CNN tanked it. Good stuff! I hope to see it up and running again soon.

Have you considered setting up a donation page to cover costs using the concept of shareware? Also a few web-ads (ala mr. drudge) could do wonders with the tons of traffic you received.

I’ll consider ads as a last resort. Perhaps on the project page, but likely not. I’ll wait and assess my access logs later to see what the actual impact is. Likely it’ll be not too bad.

@j/k: No sweat, I appreciate your suggestions.

Traffic will be gone before toy can get donation going. CNN mention..No product..no traffic..no need for donations or banners.

ps..some of you folks need to gt back to school and learn the proper sequencing of letters

Dude – nice app – helped me understand where the hurricane was really headed. Hope you get it back and running—NOAA would do well to use it. Cheers!

i haven’t been online lately so i hadn’t noticed that One was slowed up, but you’re such a gracious web neighbor that it doesn’t really matter anyway.

I know that last link says you are back, but the link goes to a 500 error. That might mean you are completely out of luck. or it might be a temporary error.

Just letting you know…

Just temporary & should be back online now… moving the entire domain under LiteSpeed instead of Apache. That’s likely jibberish for you, but translates to “things should be stabilizing soon”.

Just tried to use the NOAA online ‘suggestion box’ to recommend that they consider an app like yours.

Surprisingly the submit button produced a nice 404. I’m sure some government drone may be alerted to the problem at some point in the distant future.

I’ve talked to at least 12 Texas residents that consider your site the definitive way to understand what’s happening.

Thanks again for your gmap/hurricane app. I hope somebody in the gubment notices

Thanks :-) It’ll only get better. Stay tuned for an updated interface that allows for multiple storms in the next few days.

One thing I wish I had access to was a little more data, then I’d be able to display strike probabilities and a few other interesting things. But I’m limited to only that which Unisys provides.

Regardless, it’s been a very educating process and I’ve been more than happy to provide the service.

It would be really cool if a water temperature indicator could be included on the map info, since that is a major element to determining the course and intensity of a storm.
